Biography: Sande started as a bronco buster before going on to become an American Hall of Fame jockey and horse trainer. During his racing career, from 1918 to 1932, Sande was lauded for his many wins—most famously, of the U.S. Triple Crown in 1930.

After retiring, Sande continued into the 1940s as the leading horse trainer in the United States.

His skill as a jockey earned him immortality in the poetry of Damyon Runyon, who wrote of Sande as a once-in-a-lifetime talent.
